The Moravian College Marching Band put on quite a halftime show at this year’s Homecoming game, celebrating the theme “Heroes Big and Small.”

The theme was chosen to commemorate heroes of all kinds, which could be illustrated heroes from the pages of a comic book or those in uniform, such as doctors, police officers and firefighters. The band members dedicated their performance to these specific types of characters, real and imaginary, by selecting pieces that reflected heroism. Their performance filled the stadium with music that instilled a strong school spirit in every Hound in attendance.

Marching onto the field in seamless formation, the band reeled in the audience by playing their opening piece, “Fanfare for the Common Man.” They then stole the show by giving an incredible performance.

The other pieces featured were “Salute to Freedom,” “The Incredibles,” and the closing song, “Theme from Superman.” By the end of the performance, the crowd was left soaring higher than a superhero in the sky.

It was more than just the band’s impeccable playing and song selection that set the stadium on fire. Their ability to march in-sync with the music was mesmerizing. Each member’s steps went in a different direction at a different time than their neighbor’s, creating a series of human formations that were both impressive and entertaining.

The performance was also engaging because of  the color guard and twirler routines. The color guard girls came onto the field with poise, sending their flags into upward spirals at the right beat every time.

The featured twirler, Emily James, was especially graceful with her performance. She could be seen smiling throughout her routine. James twirled her baton with a confidence that reflected the hours of practice she put into perfecting the performance.

With another year in the books for the Moravian College Marching Band, band members reflected on the season.

Percussionist Tom Czajkowski summed up his experience, “It’s really rewarding seeing every piece come together and to see improvements after every game,” he said. “These are some of the most devoted people I’ve marched with.”

The many long hours spent rehearsing in the front of the HILL on south campus seemed to be worth it. The remarkable halftime performance was only one example that showcased the musical talent at Moravian.

Drum major Brian Strohmetz also felt sentimental about the band’s recent season. “This season has been the best of my four year tenure with the band,” he said. “Working hard towards a common goal with a group of close friends is immensely rewarding.”

Dedicated to forging strong bonds with each other through music, the Moravian College Marching Band represents the College community well. For more jaw-dropping performances and orchestrated music, look for the band at next year’s football games and fall events.
