Dear Readers,

Welcome back students, staff, faculty, and friends to the start of a new school year!

Once again, the COVID-19 pandemic is changing what our semester is going to look like, and uncertainty and confusion is in the air. But with research, understanding, and compassion (and good journalism!), we will get through it together.

The Comenian is dedicated to bringing you up-to-date news about campus life and policy to help keep the student body on the same page.

Last year was one of my proudest as your editor-in-chief.

Through endless hours of hard work and constant vigilance, our reporters and editors were able to write and publish stories twice as often as usual, bringing news to the community every Friday while we were all stuck at home and separated abruptly.

I received compliments on behalf of my whole team for our role as a connector for the whole school — we were one of the few ways that students could keep in close contact and stay in tune to campus life. We hope to live up to these glowing reviews again this year and fill that same space this year as one of the most trusted information hubs of news and connection for students, staff, faculty, and parents of the Moravian community.

We will be returning to our regular schedule of a new update of articles every other Friday, so be on the lookout for more stories in the weeks to come.

I would also like to invite anyone who may have an interest in journalism — whether it’s writing, researching, interviewing, photography, or videography — to join us at our weekly meetings on Thursdays at 4:00 p.m.

Our first meeting will take place on September 3.

We will meet in person outside of Zinzendorf 103 in the Academic Quad for those who want to get to know the team in person (with proper social distancing and mask rules, of course). However, we will also offer the option to Zoom into meetings for those who are uncomfortable or prefer to attend virtually.

For more information on how to join virtually or to ask any questions, please email me, Elizabeth Horn, at [email protected], or our advisor, English Professor Mark Harris, at [email protected]

I would also like to extend the offer to anyone interested in participating in our Living History Project. Here, we are collecting responses about daily life in the pandemic from our community in an effort to record our historical experience here at school. Join us as we document this unique time as our predecessors at the paper have done through World War I and the Civil Rights Movement

This semester coming up is going to be one for the history books.

We at The Comenian will be doing our absolute best to keep you up to date with new policies, developments, and stories about student life and our wider community throughout the year. I look forward to serving you once again as the editor-in-chief for this momentous year!

Good luck this semester!

Yours,

Elizabeth Horn
