What is your job title on campus?
Director, Reeves Library
What does your position usually entail? What department do you work in?
In addition to administrative areas such as budgets, personnel, and building matters, I work with a wonderful team to provide research resources and services to students, faculty, and staff. We provide information literacy sessions, meet one-on-one with students and faculty, present workshops, and host other events and outreach activities to highlight access to robust information and literary sources.
What are some of the unique challenges that come with your position?
One unique challenge to libraries is managing the tension between fair use and accessibility to information with the requirements and costs of copyright compliance. Digital resources and AI-generated content provide another level of access and opportunity for users, but also add another layer of complexity to academic fair use.
What are your favorite aspects of working in your position?
The students – my interactions with them are so positive, and I enjoy the connections we make! I still keep in touch with several alums. It is very satisfying to help students and to have them feel less overwhelmed with the research process or college life in general. They are incredibly appreciative of the help, and there is satisfaction in knowing that we are equipping them with life-long skills. I also enjoy my colleagues in Reeves Library! They are intelligent, intrepid researchers, innovative, and, more importantly, a lot of fun to spend my days with. They are willing to go above and beyond to be supportive of everyone. I can’t say enough great things about the library team.
What made you decide to work at Moravian?
When I started as part-time staff, I was beginning my family (my boys are now Moravian alums), and Moravian’s atmosphere was family-friendly and flexible. Also, an academic library is the perfect environment for keeping your mind engaged with interesting and varied topics.
What’s an interesting fact about yourself that most people don’t know about you?
I’m an avid NFL fan. I listen to Good Morning Football every morning as I get ready for work. I grew up in Buffalo cheering on the Bills, so they’re still my team, and I try to get to one or two games a year.
What do you do in your free time or hobbies?
See above 🙂
I like to garden and have established a native meadow garden in my yard to help attract pollinators and support the ecosystem. I also enjoy walking, particularly in our historic areas, and of course reading.
Are there any interesting projects or things you are working on, even outside of your career?
I recently joined the Moravian Church Archives Board of Directors. I’m excited to be part of this amazing historical organization and look forward to supporting them in such a direct way.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I encourage all our Moravian community to take advantage of having a library steps away from their office – or online if they prefer. Everyone here has access to such a great variety of electronic and print resources from subject-specific academic journals, to classic literature, to current best sellers. Plus, a group of people who are always happy to answer questions
