On March 22, the Amrhein Investment Club won first place in the Undergraduate Core Portfolio category at the Quinnipiac G.A.M.E. Forum. The Quinnipiac G.A.M.E. Forum is the largest student-run financial conference in the world, with over 1,300 student attendees from over 120 colleges worldwide.
This marks the club’s first time competing in the Forum since the pandemic occurred. Amrhein’s fund was automatically submitted under the Growth Fund and The Undergraduate Care Portfolio Category.
The Amrhein Investment Club had many advantages in their win. One of them is that they were one of the only democratic investment clubs competing, which allows all members to have a voice in managing the fund. Avery Napolitano ’24, the member who submitted the portfolio to the competition, describes the club as a “melting pot of majors.” Because all students are welcome to join, the club allows the fund to look into different areas of investment and think from different perspectives.
Another edge to the fund was its longevity and performance. Amrhein’s portfolio was the oldest standing fund and has a long history to show for it since its creation in 1972. Since the fall semester of 2023, the fund has increased its profits by around $900,000.
The diversity of the club’s funds also increased their odds of winning. The club invests a range of stocks, from smaller businesses that have the potential to become big to highly profitable companies. The fund continues to grow and develop with the help of its members and their combined dedication.
Maintaining the close-to $5 million dollar fund can be a tedious task for the members, as Napolitano explains. All funds that are invested in by the club must be watched and given a lot of rational thought. Every fund that is invested in or divested in is given a presentation for all members to vote on, and the majority decides what steps are to be taken next.
The commitment to the fund and its preservation paid off when Moravian University was named as the first-place winner of the Undergraduate Core Portfolio category at the very end of the night. Napolitano described the moment with a smile, recalling the moment of triumph for the attending club members after being doubtful of placing in any category after a long day.
The Amrhein Investment Club received a $1000 prize, along with a trophy to commemorate their win. However, material prizes were not the only takeaway for the day. The Quinnipiac G.A.M.E. Forum opened doors of global networking for the attendees and represented Moravian University in an impactful way.
