Dear Readers,
So, it’s been quite the summer, huh? We witnessed a presidential assassination attempt, the incumbent president dropping out of the race, and Kid Rock scream-singing to a group of Boomers who probably were confused as to why Elvis Jr. wasn’t on stage. It’s been a wild few months, where every week feels like a whole year of news has passed. It’s insane to think that less than a month and a half ago, it seemed all the more likely that Trump would get a second term; now, the presidential race has changed radically.
Whether students return to school to either start the first semester of the rest of their lives or to start their final year before they are ready to face the world (#Me). We all, as not only the Moravian community and Pennsylvanians but as Americans face a pivotal decision to make, this decision will fundamentally shape the future of this country. This decision will decide the political culture of this country. This election will decide where our fundamental American values lie.
I know as college students it’s easy to give in to cynicism, it’s easy for us to succumb to the politicians that prey on nihilism and disorder, and it’s easy to lose hope in a system that has burned us so many times, but now is the time to act. We are at a pivotal moment in our lives and history. We will soon be deciding both our own personal futures but also the future of the country and the world.
The Comenian obviously will be extensively covering the election over the course of the next 67 days and will be giving our thoughts and opinions, but just know that we, as Pennsylvanians, are the vanguard of democracy, and by all measures, we will be what decides the election. Every single possible vote counts, especially in Northampton County. So, as much as it may be exhausting and difficult to do so, please stay informed about what is going on through reputable news outlets so that you can properly make a decision in November because the stakes are just too high to sit on the sidelines.
Along with rapidly changing elections, we now have a rapidly changing campus! I know some of you might be asking what was going on all summer with the HUB. Visibly speaking, it looks like the only accomplishment was building a bigger wall than Donald Trump, but Warfel Construction has been hard at work all summer laying the foundations for Moravian’s future. Take it from someone who’s been around all summer: there has been a ton of progress over the last month, and now that the foundations are laid, we will finally see the new HUB start to take shape like a brand-new LEGO set.
Just like the rest of campus, we at The Comenian are here to bring you new and exciting programs. This semester, we will start a variety of podcast shows that will be posted on our Spotify on a variety of topics such as campus issues, entertainment, and politics. Also, if you are interested in helping make podcasts, hit us up. More details will be released at a future date, but we are excited to delve into some new territory for The Comenian!
Before I sign off: if you’re interested in joining The Comenian please join us at our meetings, which take place every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Zinzendorf Hall, room 100. We also have secondary meetings on Thursdays at the same time and place for people who can’t come on Wednesdays. If you cannot make it to meetings, that is fine as well! We fully allow asynchronous participation, so don’t feel scared about not making it to meetings.
We are looking for new writers, photographers, videographers, graphic designers, and more, so if any of those interest you be sure to stop by or email me at [email protected].
The Comenian supports a wide range of content. If you want to interview students around campus, you can. If you want to make video essays you can. If you want to make short comics, you can. Whether you want to write about news, politics, music, movies, sports, video games, food, history, or anything else, I guarantee you will have a place here.
Also, if you would like to be notified by email whenever we publish a new edition of the paper – either the online or print version – please send your address to [email protected]. We’ll add you to our email list!
That’s all from me folks! Thank you for reading our paper and be sure to check back in for future editions!
Your editor-in-chief,
AJ
