Daisy Perico is a sophomore undergraduate at Moravian University majoring in Spanish and pursuing an education certificate. Outside Moravian, Perico does nails and works at an early childhood education center as a teacher’s assistant. After she graduates she plans on becoming a high school Spanish teacher. Eventually, Perico aims to go to graduate school to earn a master’s degree and eventually a doctorate in Spanish.
How are you involved on campus?
I’m a shy person when it comes to putting myself out there. I am also a full-time student that commutes, and I work part-time, so it’s definitely been a challenge to find time to get involved on campus. Hopefully, that can change this semester!
What is your proudest accomplishment here at Moravian?
My proudest accomplishment is being able to start field experience spring of freshman year because it made me realize that I really wanted to be an educator. This experience also encouraged me to further my education here at Moravian.
Why did you choose to come to Moravian?
I chose to go to Moravian because they have a well-rounded education program. Also, I was able to start working in the classroom my freshman year which is something other schools might not allow freshmen to do.
What are your hobbies and passions?
I have a passion for working with children. They are just so curious about everything and being able to work with them brings me nothing, but joy. Another passion of mine is making handmade press-on nails. I love the idea of being able to accessorize yourself and I feel that having fancy or funky designed nails be a part of your accessory. It’s a craft that takes a lot of work, but it’s very fulfilling and something that brings me so much bliss.
What is your major? Why did you pick it?
My major is Spanish and I’m working on an education certificate. I am very fond of the Spanish language and the many opportunities that come with being bilingual. I want to teach others the beautiful language that is Spanish and share my passion for it with others.
What’s a little-known fact about you?
A little known fact about me is that I am a proud Latina that embraces my culture and heritage from both sides of my family (Colombian & Ecuadorian). I do this not only for myself, pero para mi familia que no tuvo la oportunidad.
Favorite professor? Favorite Class?
My favorite professor is Professor of Spanish & Cohen Chair in English and Literature Dr. Claudia Mesa, because she pushes me to my fullest potential and inspires me to continue moving forward with my education. She also encourages me to be curious when it comes to obtaining my goals. My favorite class is Education-213: The Arts in Education. This course and Assistant Professor of Art & Art Education Coordinator Dr. MaryJo Rosania-Harvie, who has allowed me to find my way back to visual art and teach me how I can incorporate the arts into my teaching.
What is your favorite thing to eat on campus?
The chicken fingers and fries are my go to meal at the B&G.
Where do you want to study or do homework?
I go to the Reeves Library when I want to study or do homework.
