Opening up Praise of the Week this fall semester by appreciating the smaller things: a pristine new sidewalk along the side of the HUB!
Students and staff who frequent their time on North Campus are no stranger to the struggles that have come with the HUB renovations. They have brought a chain reaction of changes for North Campus, such as the rearrangement of multiple departments, the relocation of the shuttle stop, and our temporarily stationed HUB common area in PPHAC.
The construction has made our already non-accessible friendly campus quite difficult to get around. This is especially true in the case of getting to the Star, the largest dining hall on North Campus.
Without a HUB for students and faculty to navigate through, rails stand tall to provide an alternative way into the Star and the B&G. Very rickety and narrow rails, but something is better than nothing!
Students and staff alike were pleasantly surprised to walk along a new sidewalk along Laurel Street. The sidewalk stops right before the entrances to the rails and the other sidewalk along the Makuvek Field.
This sidewalk earns the title of being the first finished (and available) walkway alongside the new HUB. No more uneven tactiles to trip over or unavoidable mud puddles to step through. The sidewalk is also wide enough for students to pass each other at a comfortable distance.
Its introduction this semester wasn’t all ideal. The stench from the port-a-potties along the construction zone had many avoiding the sidewalk. However, as of last week, it seems the source has been discarded and the area is aroma-free.
The only unfortunate aspect of this is the removal of the vegetation there. The trees alongside the sidewalk are now a memory to Moravian, with mere dirt pits to replace them. Hopefully the University will eventually surprise us by adding some luscious shrubs or flowers to bring the trees justice.
This is one resolution to the many growing pains Moravian’s campus has been experiencing since the start of the HUB’s construction. While it isn’t anything major, it is a piece to a much bigger vision which all Greyhounds anticipate seeing in the near future.
