The Moravian community just recently was given the opportunity to sign a piece of the new HUB that is quickly being renovated. As the steel beam structure is being laid for the new HUB, the construction workers left a white steel beam for the Moravian community to sign before being hoisted up into place.
I, as well as tons of others here at Moravian, signed the large white beam. I have to say that this was such an awesome experience to partake in! I left my name in red marker in case anyone spots my name!
It was refreshing to see peers and staff alike coming together to sign a piece of Moravians new history. Signing the beam made me feel that we, as students, are involved in the making of the new HUB.
Many students didn’t simply leave their names on the beam. They also made sure to leave a trace of their clubs and organizations on the beam. Many students left the symbols of their sororities and fraternities, club names, the sports they play here on campus, and their graduation years.
Others even left funny messages written on the beam which, of course, is a must. I even saw two games of tic-tac-toe illustrated on the beam as well!
All the different clubs and organization names, the messages, and graduation years fostered a sense of unity in the signing of the beam. We all came together from various clubs and organizations and classes to come and leave a mark on the new HUB.
One of my favorite things about signing the new HUB beam is that it sets the tone for what the new HUB will provide for us: a renewed location for us to come together and go about our lives here at Moravian.
Moreover, the need for a new HUB was in part to focus on student wellness which I feel the beam signing helps establish early even before the HUB is finished.
Overall, the experience of signing the beam is something I will never forget and I hope that, in the future, we get more chances to do light-hearted activities like this as a community here at Moravian. A similar event to the beam signing where we saw students come together to sign a piece of structure also took place for the Sally Beidegam building too. Furthermore, I feel as though activities like the beam signing highlight what makes our time here worthwhile: forming a community and fostering it together.
