What is your job title on campus?
My official title is Mailroom Supervisor.
What does your position usually entail? What department do you work in?
The mailroom is a part of the Business Office. The day-to-day for mailroom staff is to receive all of the incoming mail and packages for faculty, staff, and students on campus. It is also our responsibility to meter all of the outgoing mail and packages for the community, but our job is so much more than that. We are detectives, cheerleaders, and givers of sage advice. We are the physical connection to family and friends for our students.
What are some of the unique challenges that come with your position?
I would say tracking down missing packages, trying to find the intended recipients when there is no name listed on incoming mail or packages, and delivering bulky items in buildings with no elevator, just to name a few (I may have peed my pants laughing on more than one occasion trying to move large items; think of the couch scene from Friends … PIVOT!!).
What are your favorite aspects of working in your position?
My favorite thing about working in the mailroom is the interactions with the students on a daily basis. I love getting to know them on a personal level. Another aspect of my job that I love is the opportunity to build relationships with the campus community at large; I’m fortunate to work with great people from every department.
What made you decide to work at Moravian?
I discovered the job opening at Moravian while I was working at Lafayette College. It was a great opportunity for growth, while continuing to work in the college campus environment, which I had grown to love.
What’s an interesting fact about yourself that most people don’t know about you?
I’m a Jersey girl, I worked as a hairstylist, I’m always looking for a good tarot card reading, and I love to dance. It would not be unusual to catch me dancing in the aisles at the grocery store to a catchy tune.
What do you do in your free time, or hobbies?
I’ve always been an avid reader. I love historical fiction, and some of my favorites include: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, The Aviator’s Wife by Melanie Benjamin, The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, The House Girl by Tara Conklin, and A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway. When my head is not in a book, I enjoy playing pickleball and writing poetry when the mood strikes. In fact, I have a poem published in The Manuscript titled, “Four Years.” I wrote it for a student worker a few years back.
Are there any interesting projects or things you are working on, even outside of your career?
Working on my pickle ball game and striving to live a healthy lifestyle has been the focus. I’ve also been toying around with the idea of creating a recycling program here at Moravian, which would involve reusing the Amazon flats in the mailroom.
Did you plan to work in higher education?
I never planned to work in higher ed but I feel like all roads have led me here, and this is exactly where I’m meant to be at this moment in my life … until the next great adventure presents itself, of course 😉
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I have lived in Bethlehem Township with my husband and two beautiful daughters, Ryann and Sydney, for 21 years. Ryann, my oldest, recently graduated from Lafayette College and my youngest, Sydney, will be starting college this fall.
If you have the opportunity to say or do something nice for someone, take it. I promise the reward will be so much greater than you can imagine. Also, “less is more,” this is especially true for makeup.
