Finally, the sun is coming out! When I want spring to come sooner, the first thing I do is change my nails … It is as if I am speaking the transition from winter to spring into existence. Another way you can reintroduce spring back into your life is by wearing pastel and cooler-toned versions of spring colors. If you really wanted to, you could even rock some brighter colors.
Short to medium-length almond-shaped nails have been everywhere this past year, and I do not think they are going anywhere! However, I do believe that we will see more natural lengthened and shaped nails coming into style.

As stated by Mazz Hanna, a nail industry expert, “velvet nails” will continue to be on a steady rise. Velvet nails refer to the effect that you can get when using magnetic nail polish; the glitter in the polish reacts to the magnet before it has cured, which makes a cool, almost cat-eye, effect. These can also be called holographic nails, magnetic nails, or cat-eye nails. In my opinion, the bold effect of velvet nails was perfect for winter, and I am excited to see how they look in the spring.
I think that the velvet nail trend will die down a bit, and pick back up towards summer, when we are all wearing bright and bold shades. With that being said, there are still some more versatile magnetic shades you could wear in the spring such as light pink with the magnet effect over top. For a more transitional look, you could keep with the winter blue shades, but add the magnetic effect to them for some more spring themed fun. You could also go for some more spring-y toned magnetic nails, such as with pastels as a base coat.
If you want to make your own velvet nails, you need a magnet like the one sold at CirqueColors.com.
Pearl nails were also a huge trend this season. It is similar to the magnetic effect, as they both involve sparkles. The pearl effect nails have more of a “shimmer” rather than a “sparkle,”and for that reason, I think nude pearl nails will be a staple nail shade of the spring. I like to get a quick and easy pearl effect by using Essie’s Nail Art Studio Special Effects Polish in the shade Cosmic Chrome. It sounds like it would be a silver metallic, but it actually goes on sheer and creates that perfect pearl effect!

Just pop the pearlescent polish on top of a pink or nude base coat, and you are good to go with a simple yet elevated nail look for spring.
Now, let’s talk about colors and shades. As always, pastel shades will be in season once spring is in full swing. But what colors should you wear during the transitional weeks from winter to spring?
Well, you can keep it natural and go with Pantone’s color of the year – which is a light warm toned brown. This brown color polish by Essie mimics Pantone’s color of the year, and it is called “Never Skip a Beat”. It is perfect for spring, as it almost reminds me of planting in the garden. If keeping it natural, another fun way to do so is use a sheer, nude, sparkly polish – like this one from Sally Hansen called “Tinsel Time for Two”.
Finally, let’s get to the fun colors! In the beginning of spring, I opt for more pastels and cool toned shades. An example of using cool-toned polishes includes primarily blue, purples, and greys; but can also include other colors that have noticeable hints of cool shades. For example, if you want to go with a pink shade, choose one that has purple undertones instead of orange. I do this in order to slowly introduce those cute spring shades back into my life and onto my nails. I use this cool toned method in March, as it is so close to the colder months.

Once April hits, I like to incorporate some bolds back into my nail routine, like a bold deep purple. For some reason, any shade of purple just makes sense in April!
When it gets a little warmer and closer to summer, that’s when I go for more bright, bold, and warmer shades. I even think a warm and slightly bright orange could be so fun in May!
I hope next time you go to the nail salon or reach for a polish, you think about these trendy tips.
