When most people think of sororities, they think of a social sorority – a place for girls to make friends and host events. But there is another type of sorority: a service sorority.
While social sororities also do volunteer work, they don’t focus on it the same way a service sorority might. Social sororities focus on making social connections through community service while service sororities DO WHAT?
I have recently joined the university’s service sorority Gamma Sigma Sigma and am enjoying it. The service work is fun and there is a huge variety of service projects.
“We work with tons of local organizations,” said Jayden Brennan, ‘25. “From serving as the service vice president for three semesters, I was able to connect more closely with these organizations. We work with many of the local schools, animal shelters, food distribution centers, and many other local nonprofit organizations.”
Just a few weekends ago we did a clean-up at local parks.
One of the requirements for the sorority is that new members need to complete 15 hours of community service their first semester, and 20 hours every semester after that. Last semester, GSS reached a milestone of over 1,000 hours of community service.
Other than service, there are a multitude of social events that happen throughout the year.
GSS will host more casual gatherings like movie nights, painting nights, arts and craft nights, and some off-campus events. Along with these events, GSS throws a formal every spring. Unlike the social sororities at Moravian, GSS does not have a house. There is an office at the bottom of Anna Nitschmann, which Melony Nonnemacher ‘27 loves.
“We get to do our thing without being bothered by a lot of foot traffic,” she said.
The office is nice to relax in and is just big enough for its use. Everyone is extremely welcoming.
“I’m very grateful for the community that I have found in Gamma Sigma Sigma,” said Ava Larson ‘28. “All of the members are so kind. Serving the community alongside my closest friends is such a blessing!”
