We have all been there – needing the perfect playlist that hits just right. Whether we are in the car with friends and get handed the aux cord, getting ready for a party, studying for an exam, or simply just vibing out; the right playlist can make or break a moment.
But, where do you start? It’s not as easy as picking a few random songs. It takes a little thought and effort to create a playlist that will have your friends asking you to send it to them.
Here are a few simple steps to ensure that happens.
The first step to creating a great playlist is deciding what it’s for. So, ask yourself: what is the mood? Are you making this playlist for a workout, road trip, chill study session, or pre-party jams? The vibe you want will impact your song choices.
For example, a study playlist might be softer, lo-fi, or instrumental tracks to help you concentrate on your work, while a party playlist will need all bangers – songs that just make you want to jump and sing at the top of your lungs. The more specific you are with the theme, the better your playlist will turn out.
Tip: The title of your playlist can be niche and funny to keep it light and to organize your music by season and vibe.
My current playlist is called “Punxsutawney Phil Saw His Shadow,” and it is filled with Bon Iver, Iron and Wine, and Simon and Garfunkel, all artists I personally associate with the winter months.
Now that you’ve set the tone, it’s time to pick your songs. Start by adding songs you know and love; these are usually the easiest to get started with. But, don’t stop there. If you’re adding a song you know all the words to, try listening to a few new songs by the same artist or band.
Sometimes, the deep cuts or hidden gems are even better than the popular hits. Plus, artists usually have a signature sound, so this will keep the vibe consistent throughout. The more you dig, the better your playlist will become.
One of the best ways to find new music is to use the suggestions on music apps. Platforms like Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music all have algorithms to recommend songs based on what you’ve already listened to.
Spotify has taken it a step further with a new AI feature that specifically curates music to your taste and integrates it into your playlists. Sometimes, you will find a song you didn’t even know you needed. If you start with a few familiar tracks, the app will guide you to similar songs that you might love.
Once you have a good mix of classics you love and undiscovered hits, you’ll want to check in and be aware of the length of your playlist. Aim for something that fits the occasion. Having a playlist at least an hour or two long is a good rule of thumb. This way, songs don’t become repetitive, and you won’t get lost in a sea of songs that will require you to press the skip button constantly.
Lastly, keep in mind that this playlist is yours. Listen to what you like! Add songs that are special to you, even if they are a bit off-theme. You don’t have to stick with what’s trending or popular if that’s not what you like. Personal touches make your playlist feel uniquely yours and might inspire friends to add new songs to their own playlists.
After all, playlists reflect you, your vibe, and your moods.
