From Ballet to Hip Hop: MoCo Dance Company Delivers Upbeat Performance
On March 31, Moravian College Dance Company and guests held a live dance concert in Foy Concert Hall.
The concert was divided into two parts. The first was made up of nine dances, in which Moravian’s dance company performed six of the nine dances. The other three dances were done by visiting guests, including the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, In Motion Dance Company, and Coral Nolan Academy of Dance.
The second part of the night was made up of nine different dances as well, in which Moravian College Dance Company performed five of those nine dances.
The opening piece started the night on an upbeat note. Flight, performed to Lindsey Stirling’s song, “Take Flight,” had groups of MoCo dancers moving on and off the stage, with lights on the back wall changing color to the beat of the music.
For the second piece — “The Charleston,” from the movie The Great Gatsby — the company donned flapper dresses and performed a version of the jazzy tap dance that was popular back in the 1920’s and early ‘30’s.
MoCo’s dance company also explored other types of dance, including Hip-Hop. In a routine called Ladies of Hip-Hop, they danced to a few different songs, including “Caroline” by Anime and Busta Rhymes’ “Twerk It.”
After a short intermission, the company performed City Of … Friends to the song “City of Stars,” by Justin Hurwitz. This was a modern ballet piece from the movie La La Land. The dancers recreated the scene between Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling that repeats throughout the movie. They did a beautiful job capturing the actors’ movement and emotions.
Overall it was a great night that showcased amazing talent and a wide range of dance styles, from ballet to tap. The choreography to most of the dances was very impressive, as were the songs that accompanied each piece.
