Sam Lingen is an undergraduate senior here at Moravian University. He is majoring in music performance, with a concentration in classical baritone voice.
How are you involved on campus?
I am involved in many different musical ensembles on campus, including Choir, Vocalis, Celtic Ensemble, and the Mostly Monteverdi Ensemble (we call ourselves the Monties) — and many others. I am also the warden of Moravian’s chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. When I’m not doing something musical, I work at Coffeehouse on Wednesday nights in Main Hall on South Campus.
What is your proudest accomplishment at Moravian?
Completing my Honors Project. My project consisted of the analysis and orchestration of four late Romantic art songs. It was unlike anything I’ve ever done here at Moravian. It was a “long and winding road”, but I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Why did you choose to come to Moravian?
I wanted to go somewhere that was pretty far from where I live, which is in Oyster Bay, Long Island, and Moravian fit me like a glove. When I auditioned for the music department, everyone was just so welcoming, and I was absolutely thrilled to be welcomed into the fold.
What are your hobbies and passions?
I’m a huge music guy, even outside of my studies. I like to think I have a pretty good music taste for the most part. While I do enjoy listening to the great works of the classical field, I also love listening to ’60s and ’70s music (in no particular order, I’d say that my top three artists right now are The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Pink Floyd). Listening to my records is something that I absolutely love doing.
Outside of music, I really enjoy playing Smash Bros. Ultimate with my friends (Ludwig main, Ness/Lucas secondaries). I’m also a huge fan of Transformers — especially the toys.
What is your major? Why did you pick it?
My major is music performance, with a concentration in classical baritone voice. I enjoy the art of singing and want to bring the joy I have when making music to the community at large.
What’s a little-known fact about you?
Over the summer, I work at a day camp on Long Island for kids with disabilities and special needs. It’s a really beautiful experience to work there, especially since I used to attend myself. My hope is that the kids can look at people like myself and know that they can do great things.
Favorite professor? Favorite class?
There are so many good ones, but I’d say that my most fruitful experiences have been with my primary voice teacher, Greg Oaten. He’s encouraged me to take on things I never imagined I could.. I’m so grateful for all of his guidance over the past four years.
However, if we’re talking about an actual class, I really enjoyed my orchestration class with Dr. Lipkis. It’s what got the ball rolling on the idea of doing an honors project.
What is your favorite thing to eat on campus?
I’ve never really thought about it too much — I don’t lean towards anything in particular. I will say one thing, though: CJ from Clewell makes a mean barbecue brisket sandwich.
Where do you go to study or do homework?
There is no place in particular — I just go wherever I please. I do tend to practice a lot in Peter Hall, though.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
It’s been such a pleasure to attend Moravian these past four years. I genuinely have no idea where I’d be if it weren’t for the amazing people and opportunities I’ve been surrounded by. I’ll definitely be keeping in contact with the friends I’ve made here, and will certainly be visiting as much as I can.
