So, the HUB is finally open again after what feels like forever, after two years of construction, blocked hallways, random fences, and having to eat lunch in the hall awkwardly. And honestly, I’m happy about it. It’s nice to have more places to sit, hang out, and not feel like you’re in the way of everyone walking through PPHAC or in the Library.
But here’s the thing: as great as it is to have the HUB back, why did they take away the vending machines in PPHAC?!
Who decided that was okay? The ones in PPHAC and Sally were perfect. You could grab a snack between classes without worrying about being late. They were quick, easy, and right where you needed them. There was no sprinting across campus or waiting in line, just you, your ID, and a bag of chips that made everything right in the world.
Now they’re gone, and I feel betrayed. I understand that the HUB is supposed to be the “center of campus,” or whatever, but not everyone has time to go there during the day. Some of us are just trying to survive our class schedules. Sometimes, you literally have five minutes to grab something before your next lecture, and the vending machines were perfect for that.
And honestly, it’s not even just about the food –It’s about convenience. The vending machines were reliable. It didn’t matter what time it was, if you were tired, or if you were buying gummy worms for breakfast (no judgment). They were just there, ready to save you during your mid-class meltdown or that three p.m. slump when you suddenly realize you haven’t eaten since breakfast.
Now, sure, the HUB has food places, and it’s not exactly ideal when you’re in a rush. Sometimes you don’t want to go all the way across campus, stand in line, and spend $10 on a “snack.” You just want a granola bar and not to be late.
It’s such a small thing, but it actually made a big difference. The vending machines made life easier. They were the in-between class heroes, the “I forgot lunch” saviors, and the “I need caffeine right now or I’ll fall asleep in this lecture” backup plan.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the new HUB, and it’s incredible to see the campus feeling alive again. But would it really hurt to leave a few vending machines where they used to be? Just one in PPHAC. Maybe one in Sally. That’s all I’m asking.
Because at the end of the day, the HUB might be the heart of campus, but those vending machines?
They were the real MVPs.
