10 Things to Do on a Friday Night Besides Party
Growing up, the stereotypes people hear about college seem to surround one thing: parties.
Of course, there are some people who do enjoy the party lifestyle. Hearing the stereotypes about partiers isn’t always pleasant and quite frankly, I imagine it can get incredibly annoying. There’s absolutely nothing wrong if you like to go out; you do you and live it up!
However, it’s also unfair for those who prefer the more quiet lifestyle and still face these stereotypes as well. If you’re one of those people, there are ways to have fun and be social while avoiding the party scene!
Moravian is located in the perfect spot to get off campus and explore new places, and the city of Bethlehem offers countless activities that aren’t related to bar hopping and clubbing.
1. Pinterest “Party”
This is an idea that my best friend came up with in a letter she wrote to me (yes, we’re old-fashioned and wrote letters to each other during summer break). You can do this by yourself, but I think it’d be more fun with others. Pick a DIY project or food to make and go wild! Put on a rockin’ playlist (Panic! At the Disco is always a good choice), and have a dance party at the same time! Or, pop in a movie to play in the background. Either way, you’re bound to have fun.
2. Game Night
If you’re unable to come out to Board Game Club (Monday nights 7 p.m.-9 p.m. in PPHAC 116) then have your own game night in your dorm! Invite your friends, pour the wine (we’re talking casual drinking here, which is different from partying), and build those cities in Settlers of Catan, or invade your alien neighbors in Cosmic Encounter.
3. Movie Night/Movie Marathons
A movie night may be a more low-key non-party activity, but it can be quite fun all the same. It doesn’t have to include fake-buttered tasting popcorn and fountain drinks. In fact, to jazz up your popcorn, try kernel popcorn that pops on the stove–it’s a fun variant from the microwavable bags. Separate the popcorn into different bowls and stir in different spices like Old Bay, cracked pepper and sea salt, cayenne pepper, or go for a sweet twist by drizzling melted chocolate, caramel, or peanut butter. The options are endless!
4. Restaurant Crawl
For a night out on the town, try your own restaurant crawl! Now, considering we’re all in college, this doesn’t have to be expensive. Pick out an appetizer at one place, an entree at another, and a dessert at the third! The group can split the bill for each place and keep the cost down for everyone.
5. Photoshoot with Friends
If you’re like me, photoshoots can happen anytime, anyplace. However, a planned photoshoot could be super fun to do on a Friday evening. The setting sun makes a picturesque backdrop and given Moravian’s location by the beautiful Historic District and Monocacy creek, there are countless places to smile for the camera.
6. Bake Night
What’s better than food? Food with friends! Each person can come with one baked good they picked and then spend all night elbow-deep in flour. If baking isn’t your thing, try recipes from different meals like dinner or breakfast instead.
7. Spa Night
This just screams girls’ night, but who says guys can’t enjoy a hot stone massage too? (As if we have money for that, though.) Anyway, a spa night is exactly what all college students need after a week of classes that drains all the energy we might have. Even better, this can be accomplished on a budget! Target has cheap spa accessories like those squishy beads for foot baths, nail polish, face masks, and everything else you might think of to enjoy a night of pampering. Or, check out Pinterest again for a DIY face mask, hand cream, and perfume.
8. Video Game Tournament
Are you a pro at Super Mario Smash Bros and want to show your mad skills to your friends? Or maybe it’s time to test your skills at Mario Kart or an old favorite, Kirby’s Air Ride? Maybe you want to frantically button mash your way to victory in Injustice, Killer Instinct, Tekken, or Mortal Kombat? Friendly competition with your friends can be fun and self-motivational!
9. Nostalgia Night w/ Gossip Magazines!
Who doesn’t remember staying up late to read Teen Vogue under the bedsheets by flashlight, or that feeling of excitement when the next Seventeen magazine came in the mail. And who can forget those totally accurate quizzes to see if your crush likes you back or what your fashion style is? Grow back down again, blast that NSYNC, Britney Spears, and Green Day, and revisit those wonderful days of teenage angst.
10. Just Dance Party
Show off your moves to those unforgettable songs like “Starships,” “Rasputin,” and “Hey, Ya!” Prove that you’ve got the moves, the rhythm, and the fun to get up and just let loose. Get funky with some glow sticks, glow-in-the-dark items, and neon everything! Who says you have to be drunk to dance?
