Tax Questions: Moravian’s VITA Has Answers
Tax time is quickly approaching and so is the anxiety that comes with it. Luckily, Moravian College is here to help with the newly established Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA).
One of President Trump’s major victories over the course of his presidency thus far is the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, more commonly known as TCJA. Most of the changes the government passed will not go into effect until this upcoming tax year, 2018.
VITA is led by Dr. Barbara Vinciguerra and Dr. Mark Koscinski, with help from approximately fifteen students that range from sophomores to seniors. The program focuses on preparing tax returns for individuals who make less than $53,000 annually and is open to all students of the campus.
Moravian College wants to help those in the community prepare their taxes and save students approximately $200 to $300, which is normally what it costs to hire a paid preparer. The students volunteering their time on Wednesday nights had to get certified by going through rigorous training.
This is the first semester the program is being offered as a course, which students may receive credit for.
The program runs every Wednesday night, starting at 6 p.m. If you would like to make an appointment, visit the Economics and Business Department webpage.
And hurry, as spots are filling up quickly and you want to make sure you get your taxes done before April 17!
