Editor’s Letter: A New Editor Welcomes You Back to The Comenian!

These past two-and-a-half semesters have been quite a challenge with the Covid-19 pandemic and our transition to (mostly) online learning, but I’m hopeful that our campus community will continue to support one another through these difficult times.

More than ever, we need to rely on one another for support, and I believe that as a campus community we have done a great job staying focused and united.

The Comenian has been a Moravian institution since 1891, when its first issue appeared on campus. Since then, we have persistently stood as the voice of the student body. With a new semester already in full swing, we aim to continue to amplify the voices of our student body to the greater Moravian College community.

But first, I would like to also take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Samantha Riley, a senior year English major and art minor, and for this semester I will be serving as the paper’s editor-in-chief.

I couldn’t be more honored to follow in the footsteps of Elizabeth Horn.

Ever since we met during freshman orientation, I admired Liz for how well-spoken, kind, and open-minded she is. It has been a privilege to be able to work with her on The Comenian over the last four years. Liz has a talent for producing timely and engaging content while also maintaining an organized and professional webpage, and I will strive to to continue to produce the high-quality paper you’ve come to expect from us.

With that in mind, The Comenian plans to continue publishing Anna Litofsky’s beloved comic “Behind the Mask,” and to also begin a new series called “The Class that Made a Difference,” where we feature Moravian alumni who tell us about the undergraduate courses they took here that ended up having a positive impact on their lives and careers.

One of my main goals for the newspaper this semester is to diversify our team of writers and to publish stories that speak to students of color and to members of the LGBTQIA+ community. I welcome any and all students from these and other under-represented communities to join us.

Everyone is welcome at The Comenian. Our meetings are held via Zoom every Wednesday at 5:00 PM. And please visit our table at the Club Fair on February 9th at 7:00 PM.

For any additional information or for access to our Zoom link, feel free to email me at [email protected]
