Dear Readers,
Welcome to this year’s first edition of The Comenian! I’d like to introduce myself as the new editor-in-chief of this wonderful publication. I’ve been writing for The Comenian since my freshman year, and I’m honored to continue the legacy of those before me.
I’ve just returned from a semester of study abroad in Florence, Italy, which opened my eyes to the vastness and kindness that the world has to offer – and although I was able to explore some of the beauty of Europe, I missed Moravian during my time away, and I’m so excited to be back.
To those returning to campus this fall, welcome back! And to new first-year students and transfers, welcome to Moravian! This likely feels like a scary time – I remember being so nervous before my first-year move-in that I made myself sick for days, so if you’re feeling anxious, you’re not alone.
Even though this transition might be hard, Moravian has countless resources to help you along the way: Resident Advisers, Orientation Leaders, counselors on campus, The Health Center, The Writing Center and Math Lab, Writing Fellows, and the newly renamed Laurie Riley ’82 Center for Career Success.
I’d also like to highlight an article I wrote last year regarding The Red Zone, which is the period before Fall Break where sexual assault is statistically more likely to occur. Although I hate that this warning is needed, I encourage all students to be aware of their surroundings and bring a buddy when going out.
With the HUB under construction until Fall Break, this is sure to be an exciting semester. If you’re interested in learning more about joining The Comenian or other organizations, consider coming out to the Club Fair on Sept 9, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM!
For other campus news, the front entrance of the HUB is now open, so that is where students will access the Star and B&G. The previous provost, Dr. Carol Traupman-Carr, has moved to a new position on campus, Oracle Student Management. Dr. Jay Scifers, formerly associate provost and dean of the College of Health Sciences, is serving as our interim provost.
The Laurie Riley ’82 Center for Career Success has also been renamed.
This year, many of our amazing writers have graduated, including our previous editor-in-chief, AJ Minnich. AJ helped propel this publication to heights it hasn’t seen in decades, and I would like to take a moment to thank him, as well as all our past reporters, for the time and dedication they put into this paper to bring it to where it is today.
On that note, if you’re interested in joining The Comenian, please join us at our meetings, which take place every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Zinzendorf Hall, room 100. We also have secondary meetings on Thursdays at the same time and place for people who can’t come on Wednesdays. If you cannot attend meetings, that is fine as well; we allow asynchronous participation, so you don’t need to worry about missing meetings.
We are looking for new writers, photographers, videographers, graphic designers, and more, so if any of those interests you, be sure to stop by or email me at [email protected].
The Comenian supports a wide range of content. If you want to interview students around campus, you can. If you want to make video essays, you can. If you want to make short comics, you can. Whether you want to write about news, politics, music, movies, sports, video games, food, history, or anything else, I guarantee you will have a place here.
Also, if you would like to be notified by email whenever we publish a new edition of the paper – either the online or print version – please send your address to [email protected]. We’ll add you to our email list!
Thanks for reading, folks, and I look forward to another great year of providing news to our campus community and beyond!
Your (new) editor-in-chief,
Liz
