Dear Readers,
I’ve been thinking a lot about the state of our society, and I believe we need to talk about Charlie Kirk’s assassination. I personally cannot advocate for political violence, and when I heard the news, I feared what this means for American society.
Yes, I believe his opinions are bad, but are we any better than those that we criticize if we start shooting everyone we don’t agree with? If I don’t agree with the death penalty, I morally cannot support Kirk’s death, no matter his stances on the issues.
My heart goes out to his wife and two children, who not only had to witness and forever remember that traumatic event, but also have to carry on without a father and a husband. When violence becomes a political language, democracy loses its voice.
To pivot to campus news, we welcome you to a new edition of The Comenian! It’s that time of the year when summer turns to fall, and that one-time hole in the center of our campus turns into a three-story glass building. Wow!
This first month back at school, the weather has been beautifully temperate, and as someone who moved into a dorm with no A/C, I’m very thankful for that. Speaking of, dorming feels like such a full circle experience: I started my freshman year in Bernie Willie with no A/C, and now I’m in an old building (that I otherwise love), which also has no A/C.
Apparently, my college journey began and will end in a light sheen of sweat; tradition is tradition! That’s the joy of attending a college that’s over 200 years old, I suppose.
As the buzz of construction continues to disrupt campus, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Facilities and the HUB construction workers. I live near the construction zone, so I hear them working from sunrise to sunset, even on the hottest days. So, a big thank you to them for working so diligently so that we can get our HUB back as soon as possible.
I also would like to point out that The Comenian is on socials! Follow our Instagram @thecomenian for updates about articles and short TikTok-style videos, where we interview students across campus. We’re also doing podcasts, so if you’re interested in listening to them or helping out, check out our Instagram for more information!
Here are a few campus events coming up:
Heritage Day is on Wednesday, Sept. 17, and classes are cancelled for that day.
The Comenian will be tabling in PPHAC every other Monday following our edition’s releases, with our first being this Monday, Sept. 15. We’ll have a tip box, where you can suggest story ideas, give feedback (and be eligible for a prize), and find other fun things to do, so stop by at 4 pm!
Reeves Library will also be hosting an author talk and community engagement event featuring Jennie Woods, author of “A Boy Like Me,” a novel that tells the story of a transgender teen navigating identity and relationships. Venue is Reeves’ Afterwords Cafe on Sept. 22, from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
The Comenian is offering a series of free workshops for those interested in learning about The Adobe Suite, starting with an InDesign workshop on Wednesday, Sept 17, from 4:30 to 5 p.m. in Zinzendorf 100. We’ll then host a Photoshop Workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 24, also from 4:30 – 5:00 p.m.
Our editors will also be running a series of writing workshops starting on Oct. 1 at 4:30 in Zinzendorf 100, focusing on News Writing. Our next seminar will take place the following week, Oct 8, at 4:30 in the same location, but will present a how-to guide for Opinion Writing.
I hope you all are surviving your classes! Now onto our recruitment spiel:
If you’re interested in joining The Comenian, please come to our meetings, which take place every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Zinzendorf Hall, room 100. We also have secondary meetings on Thursdays at the same time and place for people who can’t come on Wednesdays. If you cannot attend meetings, that is fine as well; we allow asynchronous participation, so you don’t need to worry about missing meetings.
We are looking for new writers, photographers, videographers, graphic designers, and more, so if any of those interests you, be sure to stop by or email me at [email protected].
The Comenian supports a wide range of content. If you want to interview students around campus, you can. If you want to make video essays, you can. If you want to make short comics, you can. Whether you want to write about news, politics, music, movies, sports, video games, food, history, or anything else, I guarantee you will have a place here.
Also, if you would like to be notified by email whenever we publish a new edition of the paper – either the online or print version – please send your address to [email protected]. We’ll add you to our email list!
Thanks for reading, folks!
Your editor-in-chief,
Liz
