Dear Readers,
I’ve been thinking a lot about the state of our society, and I believe we need to talk about Charlie Kirk’s assassination. I personally cannot advocate for political violence, and when I heard the news, I feared what this means for American society.
Yes, I believe his opinions are bad, but are we any better than those that we criticize if we start shooting everyone we don’t agree with? If I don’t agree with the death penalty, I morally cannot support Kirk’s death, no matter his stances on the issues.
My heart goes out to his wife and two children, who not only had to witness and forever remember that traumatic event, but also have to carry on without a father and a husband. When violence becomes a political language, democracy loses its voice.
To pivot to campus news, we welcome you to a new edition of The Comenian! It’s that time of the year when summer turns to fall, and that one-time hole in the center of our campus turns into a three-story glass building. Wow!
This first month back at school, the weather has been beautifully temperate, and as someone who moved into a dorm with no A/C, I’m very thankful for that. Speaking of, dorming feels like such a full circle experience: I started my freshman year in Bernie Willie with no A/C, and now I’m in an old building (that I otherwise love), which also has no A/C.
Apparently, my college journey began and will end in a light sheen of sweat; tradition is tradition! That’s the joy of attending a college that’s over 200 years old, I suppose.
As the buzz of construction continues to disrupt campus, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Facilities and the HUB construction workers. I live near the construction zone, so I hear them working from sunrise to sunset, even on the hottest days. So, a big thank you to them for working so diligently so that we can get our HUB back as soon as possible.
I also would like to point out that The Comenian is on socials! Follow our Instagram @thecomenian for updates about articles and short TikTok-style videos, where we interview students across campus. We’re also doing podcasts, so if you’re interested in listening to them or helping out, check out our Instagram for more information!
Here are a few campus events coming up:
Heritage Day is on Wednesday, Sept. 17, and classes are cancelled for that day.
The Comenian will be tabling in PPHAC every other Monday following our edition’s releases, with our first being this Monday, Sept. 15. We’ll have a tip box, where you can suggest story ideas, give feedback (and be eligible for a prize), and find other fun things to do, so stop by at 4 pm!
Reeves Library will also be hosting an author talk and community engagement event featuring Jennie Woods, author of “A Boy Like Me,” a novel that tells the story of a transgender teen navigating identity and relationships. Venue is Reeves’ Afterwords Cafe on Sept. 22, from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
The Comenian is offering a series of free workshops for those interested in learning about The Adobe Suite, starting with an InDesign workshop on Wednesday, Sept 17, from 4:30 to 5 p.m. in Zinzendorf 100. We’ll then host a Photoshop Workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 24, also from 4:30 – 5:00 p.m.
Our editors will also be running a series of writing workshops starting on Oct. 1 at 4:30 in Zinzendorf 100, focusing on News Writing. Our next seminar will take place the following week, Oct 8, at 4:30 in the same location, but will present a how-to guide for Opinion Writing.
I hope you all are surviving your classes! Now onto our recruitment spiel:
If you’re interested in joining The Comenian, please come to our meetings, which take place every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Zinzendorf Hall, room 100. We also have secondary meetings on Thursdays at the same time and place for people who can’t come on Wednesdays. If you cannot attend meetings, that is fine as well; we allow asynchronous participation, so you don’t need to worry about missing meetings.
We are looking for new writers, photographers, videographers, graphic designers, and more, so if any of those interests you, be sure to stop by or email me at [email protected].
The Comenian supports a wide range of content. If you want to interview students around campus, you can. If you want to make video essays, you can. If you want to make short comics, you can. Whether you want to write about news, politics, music, movies, sports, video games, food, history, or anything else, I guarantee you will have a place here.
Also, if you would like to be notified by email whenever we publish a new edition of the paper – either the online or print version – please send your address to [email protected]. We’ll add you to our email list!
Thanks for reading, folks!
Your editor-in-chief,
Liz

Charlie Kirk’s opinions were anything but “bad”. They were common sense and traditional. They’ve only become “dangerous” over the past 10-15 years, eliciting propagandists to call people like him a Nazi. Faith, Family, Purpose, Life. Those are values of a Nazi?
He was having an impact with the youth, and it was great to see. It instilled hope for the future, and hope for this young(er) generation. We typically look at our predecessor generations and think “Wow, they’ve lost it.” That wasn’t necessarily the case when looking at many in Gen Z.
Unfortunately, the college (mis)educated fail to live in reality. One side of the spectrum is valueless, soulless, and violent. American ideals and values are anathema to them. Americans do not need to have the same values, but one would expect Americans to at least have similar values. Without some common ground, a civilization, a nation, is bound to crumble.
When nearly 50% of one side condones assassination, it is more than a fringe component. A party of murder it is, and their is an history of it. All presidents, sans JFK, have been members of the same party. SC Justice, same party. Congressional baseball team, same party. Assault & Battery of a US Senator, same party. One party targets law enforcement, to include assassinations of LE members.
There should not be blood spilled in response, but people and institutions must be held accountable at this point, and they need to be well targeted. When educators laugh at assassinations, and talk show pundits state that he deserved it,… start there.
It’s disheartening to see my Alma mater go down this dirty route. There are some great universities out there that focus on developing good people, good Americans, and I no longer think Moravian is one of them. Vocational colleges draw in good people who don’t have time for nonsense that comes along with traditional colleges. They focus on their trade, and don’t have the time or care to bicker about collegiate frivolities. Yet, despite some being young, they maintain solid values, and I attribute that to not being exposed to post-modernist, leftists ideologies. They are the baseline- they are the norm, and what you would expect of someone who has not undergone any sort of indoc.

Hi Mike! I’d first like to address your assertion that Charlie Kirk’s opinions were anything but “bad.” Here are just a few of those opinions, which he willingly and publicly shared:
– The second amendment is worth the cost of “some gun deaths”
– It was a mistake to pass the Civil Rights Act in 1964
– LGBTQ is a social contagion
– We need armed militias to prevent the diminishing and decreasing of white demographics
– Abortion is worse than the Holocaust
– Israel is not intentionally killing kids
– Palestine does not exist
– He would force his ten year old daughter to carry a pregnancy to term if she were assaulted
– Trans people should be “taken care of” the way we used to in the 50s and 60s
If these opinions, in your eyes, are “common sense” and represent “faith, family, purpose” I fear we are already operating with completely different values and understandings of the world, particularly when it comes to “faith.”
Secondly, I’m interested in your claim that those on the left side of the spectrum stray further and further from American ideals and traditions and instead have become a “party of murder.” What, exactly, are these American ideals you speak of? Let me remind you that America was quite literally built on the colonization and murder of indigenous people and the kidnapping, enslavement, and murder of African people. Where religion is concerned, those who were colonized and enslaved had a choice: convert to Christianity and be baptized, or be killed. America has always been about murderous conquering. To claim that the left is a party of murder and violence when Kirk and others on the right said outright that school children are simply the unfortunate casualties we have to accept in order to keep gun access, not to mention the party that stormed the Capitol when their candidate didn’t win an election seems…unfounded.
What stands out to me most of all when reading this comment is the utter lack of identification of “values.” Several times, you mention “solid values,” “good people,” “good Americans,” etc. What, exactly, are the values and the goodness that you speak of? Is it simply anything that you disagree with? Do you have real, identifiable values that you adhere to every day of your life, or are you just using this as a buzzword because you’re mad that people aren’t dropping to their knees mourning over a man who made millions of dollars off of preaching hatred and debating younger people in order to seem intelligent? Were you this angry when you saw videos of Palestinian children carrying their siblings’ body parts in bags and starving to death, or when you heard about elementary school children being murdered while learning their ABCs? Do you ever comment under those posts and articles, or just the Moravian student newspaper? So many characters were used, and yet there was so little substance in this comment.

Oh, yeah, the 2020 election. Just like how all we heard for 8 years was “Bush was selected, not elected!” and “Not my president!” Or, how Russia helped steal the 2016 election. Or, how there were inconsistencies in the 2024 election.
And January 6? The riot that lasted two hours in the wake of SIX MONTHS of rioting by democrats, antifa and blm? I think they’re still rioting in Portland.
You have likely never listed to Charlie Kirk, so whatever you have cited has come from a biased source. Do yourself a favor. Listen to him once.
Also, before mentioning the 2A, educate yourself on why we have the 2A to begin with.
Most of the left is no longer worth engaging, especially someone of your caliber. The possibility of Reconciliation is long past. We’ll let God sort it out later.
