On Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025, Moravian officially opened the new, long-awaited Haupert Union Building (HUB). One of the most impressive features of the new building is the diverse lounge and socializing spaces found on each floor, especially the meditative Wellness Suite.
When I first heard that the new HUB would have a space like this, I was head-over-heels in love with the idea! Located on the third floor, the Wellness Suite is a serene, sensory-friendly area with soft lighting, individual sensory rooms, a wellness resource room, and comfortable seating.
When you first enter the suite, you are greeted with a wide array of seating options, including soothing rocking chairs, swing egg chairs, and along-the-wall nooks surrounded by soft moss (word has it that the moss is real)! Soft lighting from the overhead popcorn-kernel-shaped fixtures mellows the atmosphere even more and is a nice complement.
The suite features three small sensory rooms. While the rooms are bare, aside from having a firm chair and ottoman, I appreciate their simplicity and how necessary it may be for those of us overstimulated by loud sounds and colors. Sometimes, the main suite area is occupied by a friend group, and I just want a confined space that isn’t too ornate or bright to recharge.
At first, I was worried that the suite would become just like any other lounge space in the HUB or on campus, where people would talk loudly with their friends. The first couple of times I went there, that sadly seemed like it would be the case, but honestly, as some time has passed, more people are respecting the space for what it is and keeping loud conversations to a minimum, which I appreciate.
If you ask any Moravian student what the best part of the suite is, more likely than not, they will mention the resource room, and for good reason! I’ve only been to that room once, but I’ve been totally enamored with its design and decor. Whoever decided to have a space with a massage gun, a water calligraphy set, and an aroma diffuser in one room deserves the warmest hug because the resource room is pure brilliance!
The resource room is also complete with sensory toys, stuffed animals, a zen garden kit, a noise machine, and a coffee/tea machine with packets and cups provided, perfect for when you’re in desperate need of comfort away from academic stress!
My only grievance is that this room is rarely available. You basically have to camp outside it if you want to use it, which is unfortunate because some people use it for hours upon hours at a time. That’s why I hope the other sensory rooms and the main area can eventually have some of the features of the resource room to make it much more accessible to everyone else occupying the suite.
Still, I’m appreciative of this special space and grateful to the alumni, administrators, and President Bryon Grigsby for making it possible. A suite like this is a wonderful step forward in having more sensory-friendly, accessible areas on campus.
For the past few years, Moravian has already made substantial commitments to supporting students’ mental health and wellness, from having our own Peers and Wellness (PAW) team to clubs such as Disability and Neurodiversity Advocacy (DNA) and Morgan’s Message. This suite is even more proof of this dedication to mental health, and I hope this momentum can find its way into other buildings on campus.
When I walked in there, the atmosphere was just so relaxing,” said Manuel Barragan, class of ‘26, psychology major. “It was so relaxing that I literally almost fell asleep twice.”
