Picture this: your trash absolutely reeks. Being a good roommate, you decide to tie it up and take it out. You slightly open the front door and toss it outside. Job well done.
Oh, look! A trash can only fifty feet away! A dumpster right across the street! I wonder what that’s there for…
Please stop leaving your trash lying around! I’m not talking about those living in the traditional-style dorms. I’m talking directly to everyone living in the Hillsides, Nitschmann, Spangenberg, the Townhouses, and Beck and deSchweinitz.
I’ve seen way too many trash bags left on porches and doorsteps, sometimes for days or even a week.
For one, it’s gross. The trashy smell that you turn your nose up at is like a yummy beacon to wildlife. The campus squirrels will most gladly rip open the plastic and feast on what’s inside, leaving a disgusting mess on the sidewalk.
Second, it’s plain rude. Moravian’s hardworking facilities team drives around to pick up trash bags left by residents pretty regularly. Don’t make them walk all the way to your doorstep to get your trash. Make it easy for them and put it in the designated spots.
And I know the weather has been absolutely freezing lately, and you probably don’t want to be outside any longer than you have to. But if you’re cold, everyone is cold. Take one minute out of your day to lighten our facilities workers’ load.
Additionally, practice other good trash-related behaviors. I hope this is obvious, but don’t litter. If the trash can you were going to use is overflowing, find the next closest one instead of trying to shove something in that will inevitably fall out. And as always, try to recycle!
For as long as I’ve been a Moravian student, the unspoken rule (that I am now speaking) is that students should leave trash bags by campus trash cans for facilities to pick up. There are multiple outside almost every one of the dorm buildings I listed above.
That, or take it to a dumpster. There’s a dumpster behind Hillside 2, one behind Bernie-Willie, one behind Nitschmann, and one on W. Laurel St. right across from Spangenberg.
Next time you need to take the trash out, please be courteous and put it in the right spot.
