Rant of the Week: Was Heritage Day All It Was Made Out To Be?

As a freshman, I was more than a little intrigued about Moravian’s Heritage Day. For weeks, I had been hearing about it, and the fact that we didn’t have off for Labor Day but did for Heritage Day had me somewhat excited for the event.

Now that the day’s events have passed, I must say that Heritage Day was kind of a letdown.

Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t horrible or anything, except for the picture at least, but it simply didn’t live up to the expectations that were set.

When I arrived at Johnston Hall, I thought there would be more activities to do, since we were supposed to arrive almost 2 hours before the buses took us to our separate service projects. But everyone just kind of sat there for an hour, listened to the speakers, and played a confusingly explained game of bingo.

While I’m on that note, I still have no idea what we were doing with that bingo game.

The actual service project, however, was easily the best part as there were nice people and it was just fun to help out. But I wouldn’t say it made up for getting up at the butt-crack of dawn and dilly-dallying for two hours.

After the projects, though, came the worst part of the day’s activities: the picture.

I think everyone can agree that taking that picture was agonizing.

We had to stand in that blisteringly hot field for an excruciatingly long ten to twenty minutes waiting for them to take the picture. At that point, everyone was hungry and just wanted to eat. It felt like something that really shouldn’t have taken long was taking forever.

This issue could have easily been avoided by giving everyone their shirts before they went on the service projects so that everyone could simply go from the bus onto the field rather than wait in a giant line.

Speaking of giant lines, the lunch line was even worse than the one for t-shirts.

Even though there were two lines, both moved at an agonizingly slow pace. I was closer to the front of the line and it still took almost 15 minutes to get food, so I can’t imagine how it must have been for the people in the back, because for long periods the line just wouldn’t move at all.

So was heritage day horrible? No, but it certainly was a disappointing event that had way too much dilly-dallying and waiting in lines.

At least the pulled pork was good, though.
