Slideshow: Campus Tree Walk

“These honey locusts were planted around the old quad about sixty years ago to add color and give the space a more intimate feel,” says Randy Haffling. Tree I.D. #84-87

On a beautiful morning following Eric Rutkow’s talk on the role of trees in American history, Randy Haffling, Moravian’s general services manager, led a tour of the College grounds.

In the last few years, Moravian students and staff, with the help of the Bartlett Tree company, have identified and marked hundreds of trees on both north and south campus (searchable online here).

Our small group spent a leisurely hour investigating some dozen of Moravian most historic trees, including those in the slideshow above. Our walk showed they are in very good hands. “I look at the care that my predecessors took with the campus trees 100 years ago,” says Haffling. “I want to make sure that students 100 years from now can benefit from the care we’re taking today.”
