Club Spotlight: The Manuscript
What is your club about?
The Manuscript is Moravian’s student-run literary magazine. We accept poetry, short stories, personal essays, and artwork from the Moravian community and publish them in a composition available around campus every year. It’s amazing to see so much unique creativity and skill on display in one space. Students can also join the club as editors to review and offer suggestions on submissions before they are accepted, which is a great way to get involved and practice editing skills.
When was your club established?
The earliest known edition of the Manuscript dates back to 1950, so we’ve been around for a long time.
Who are your current leaders (advisors, president, vice president, etc.)?
Anna Litofsky is President, Amanda Whitworth is Vice President, Brittany Schleicher is Treasurer, and Gianna Tully is Secretary. Dr. Joyce Hinnefeld is our faculty adviser.
When does your club meet?
We meet once a month typically on the bottom floor of Reeves Library in front of the Afterwords café.
What is the most popular activity that the campus knows you for?
Producing the literary magazine every year is our biggest and most well-known project. We also have an annual Publication Party to celebrate each newly released Manuscript.
What are the biggest challenges that your club faces?
Making sure the magazine is finished before the end of the school year can be a challenge, but we’re always able to distribute copies around campus by the beginning of the next semester. Sometimes it’s also difficult to get the word out that submissions are open so we receive enough of them.
If you could pair up with another club for an event or project, who would it be?
We would love to pair up with any club interested in combining their subject matter with writing and art. One idea could be for a club’s members to create pieces based around their club’s focus to be featured in the Manuscript.
What is the latest project that your club is excited about?
For Moravian’s National Week on Writing, we had a little walk-in HUB gallery featuring Manuscript works from last year. It felt great to promote these creative pieces with their surplus of skill and imagination.
If you had an unlimited budget, what dream project would your club put it towards?
Having an unlimited budget would ensure we can produce as many copies of the magazine as we want. I would also love to pay our editors for their time and energy spent reviewing submissions.
We’d love to feature your creative work in The Manuscript! The deadline for submissions has been extended to February 13th, 2022. You can send up to 3 pieces (titles included) to [email protected].
