For students looking to wander off the beaten textbook path, Sorcery & Scripts, the newest addition to the Historic Downtown Bethlehem shopping scene, is a great treasure, especially for those like me who love to read “romantasy” books.
The downtown setting offers strong foot-traffic potential; college students, tourists, and residents all wander the Broad and Main Street area. Its proximity to Moravian makes it the perfect stop, whether you’re grabbing your next great read or winding down after a study session. From the outside, the storefront appears to be a modest downtown spot, but inside, the space has been transformed to serve two purposes: a curated bookstore and an event area.
The store leans heavily into romance and “romantasy” books. The store also sells board games and hosts events, including nights of magic, role-playing game sessions, book clubs, and craft events.
This hybrid business design is rare for the local market and offers more than a typical retail experience. It has a very community-focused feeling and capitalizes on two big interests of college students, who live in all directions of the bookshop.
While I am not a big gamer, I know tons of people at Moravian who are. I am a big “romantasy” reader and was thrilled to see some of my favorite covers in the shop, along with a few new ones to try. Because the bookstore is curated to the specific genre I am interested in, I am confident that anything I pick up from there will be enjoyable!
In recent years, college student life has placed more emphasis on not just academics, but community and mental health, especially at Moravian. A place like Sorcery & Scripts fits that niche; it’s not a library or a big chain bookstore, but a place that encourages gathering around shared interests.
For groups or clubs on campus, this can be a place to visit when seeking something a little different to do, and could easily become a go-to spot.
As someone who has never been a big partier and loves a good daytime activity, this is a great place. It surpasses the typical bar or cafe experiences in Bethlehem, offering something unique, low-cost, interest-driven, and relaxed to students.
I’d highly recommend checking out this bookshop, with the caveat that it is a specialized store, but that’s what makes it so special.
