Welcome back, readers, to the newest edition of The Comenian! Our staff has been working so hard behind the scenes to write news and articles of all sorts for you, so I hope you enjoy this edition.
As midterms wrap up, the weather gets warmer, and graduation looms for our seniors, there’s a lot of emotion and stress in the air, but one thing that always helps me when I feel stressed is the act of writing.
I would be mistaken to not at least send a shout out to The Comenian for all that it has done for me for the last few years. When looking through some of my old articles, I realized how much my editors, adviser and peers have improved my writing. Being a reporter has made me a more empathetic person, meeting and interviewing people from all walks of life, introducing me to ways of living I never even thought about.
Not only that, but writing has helped me work through some of the most difficult things a person can experience. I’ve been journaling and writing across genres for longer than I can remember, and if it weren’t for the support that writing offered me, backed by my peers, I would not be half the person I am today.
Reporting teaches you more than writing skills: it teaches perseverance, communication skills and how to identify journalism that is well-done and trustworthy.
If you’re even a little curious about journalism, storytelling or media, I encourage you to give it a try. You don’t need experience – just a willingness to learn; some of our strongest voices on staff didn’t start as writers at all, they just showed up.
I cannot recommend writing enough, even if you aren’t an English or humanities major; some of our most interesting (and most read) articles have been written by people aren’t English majors and don’t plan to pursue a career in writing, let alone journalism.
As a student journalist, you get to learn about everything, especially things you are interested in; since I started writing for The Comenian my freshman year, I’ve written almost 200 articles and learned so much about things I never thought I would be able to understand.
So, if you’re interested in joining The Comenian, please come to our meetings, which take place every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Zinzendorf Hall, room 100. We also have secondary meetings on Thursdays at the same time and place for people who can’t come on Wednesdays. If you cannot attend meetings, that is fine as well; we allow asynchronous participation, so you don’t need to worry about missing meetings.
We are looking for new writers, photographers, videographers, graphic designers, and more, so if any of those interests you, be sure to stop by or email me at [email protected].
The Comenian supports a wide range of content. If you want to interview students around campus, you can. If you want to make video essays, you can. If you want to make short comics, you can. Whether you want to write about news, politics, music, movies, sports, video games, food, history, or anything else, I guarantee you will have a place here.
Also, if you would like to be notified by email whenever we publish a new edition of the paper – either the online or print version – please send your address to [email protected]. We’ll add you to our email list!
Writing won’t solve everything, but it gives you a way through, and sometimes, that’s enough to carry you through, so come try something new and write for The Comenian.
Thanks for reading, folks!
As always, your editor-in-chief,
Liz
