Dear readers,
Welcome to the final edition of this academic year. Wow, where do I even begin?
I’ve written over 250 articles, and this is the last one that I will ever compose for The Comenian.
I’ve been writing for longer than I can remember, and have been involved in journalism since the 10th grade. Still, I was so afraid to step into this role and this year. To start, I spent the Spring 2025 semester abroad, and coming back to Moravian this year as a senior was definitely a roller coaster.
Coming back to begin with was hard enough – I loved Italy, and after I came home, I was so depressed to be back, missing all of the new experiences and adrenaline I constantly felt while abroad (and my friends, the art, music, gelato and everything else, of course).
But I came back to Moravian after seven months away and immediately stepped into this role, and I am so proud of this staff, albeit small but mighty, and everything we have accomplished this year.
But I couldn’t have done it alone: Professor Harris, my staff and editors, my beloved friend and managing editor Fatimah and the wonderful support systems that Moravian has arranged for students like myself have made my success, and the paper’s success, possible.
Let me also emphasize how profoundly grateful I am for the opportunities The Comenian has given me. I’ve met so many wonderful people, attended amazing events and become a better person in every way that you could imagine through reporting.
Fatimah has been a lifeline for me this year; I don’t know how I would have survived without her, both as a friend and a partner in leading this newspaper. I’m so proud of her and thankful to be able to call her a friend, and I know very few people more passionate than her.
Megan, your writing bleeds spirit and sincerity, and you are such a kind, compassionate and talented person. I know you are going to do amazing things in your life, and I’m grateful to be just a small part of it.
Cat, you’re a wonderful person, friend and reporter, and I’m so proud of you and the work you’ve done for this paper. Thank you for stepping up when we needed you, and I know you’re going to do the same, and more, for the students you teach.
And, as much as I’m proud of everyone else, I’m also proud of myself. I won’t lie and say that last year hasn’t been hard on me, but I’m graduating with Honors and as a Fulbright Scholar, when two years ago, I didn’t even know if I would have enough money to continue higher education.
Higher education tests you, already, but I chose a more difficult route. I knew I would need to work to support myself during school, but I also knew that my time at Moravian was short, so I involved myself in every activity I was interested in. If that meant sleepless nights once in a while, or all the time, then so be it.
And I loved my time here. I’ve always been bad at change – you could ask my mom: I cry about everything. The day I arrived at Morvian to move in, I made myself so anxious that I was throwing up the entire night and morning of arriving (which was extra awful in the Bernie-Willie lack of AC of 2022). I’ll cry when I graduate, but to be the sappiest editor of all time, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” — Winnie the Pooh (A.A. Milne)
Thank you for reading The Comenian, and as usual, if you are interested in joining, reach out to our new editor-in-chief, Luzmarie Tavarez at [email protected]. Congrats, Luz – I know you’re going to do a fantastic job with this paper!
