Club Spotlight: The Comenian
What is your club about?
The Comenian is the independent, student-run newspaper of Moravian University. We report on all manner of things pertaining to MU.
When was your club established?
The Comenian was established in 1891.
Who are your current leaders?
Our current advisor is Professor Mark Harris, editor-in-chief is Nicholas Wan, managing editor is Kaitlyn Furst, and copy editor is Anna Litofsky.
When does your club meet?
Our club meets every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. via Zoom.
What is the most popular activity that the campus knows you for?
Our most popular activity is reporting and spotlighting issues on campus. Additionally, our regular features like the Professor Spotlight and Anna Litofsky’s “Behind the Mask” comic have been perennial favorites these last few years.
What are the biggest challenges that your club faces?
Our staff is a small but dedicated bunch of students, so covering the major events and issues on campus is difficult.
What is the latest project that your club is excited about?
What you’re holding in your hands is our latest project — a print edition of the newspaper! We haven’t done one of these since 2018, so it’s great to finally print the paper again. It’s just like the good ol’ days!
If you had an unlimited budget, what dream project would your club put it towards?
Paying our writers and editors for their hard work.
What are the benefits of joining The Comenian?
Benefits of joining The Comenian include getting published and building a portfolio of written work, which helps our writers in the job hunt after college. Our writers have the opportunity to bring about change on campus through their writing. Additionally, our reporters attend fun events, like the Field of Screams or Downtown Bethlehem Ghost Tour, and get reimbursed for the costs. We get the opportunity to speak with interesting people, including president Bryon Grigsby, and make connections with other students and staff members.
Those interested in joining The Comenian are encouraged to contact Nicholas Wan ([email protected]) for more information and to be added to our mailing list. The Comenian is actively looking for reporters, editors, videographers, photographers, and any and all with a passion for writing and reporting. All are welcome; no prior knowledge of journalism required.
