Hear from Sydnie Stanton ‘27, founder and president, of one of Moravian’s newest clubs, Tennis Club!
What is your club about?
Our club is about providing an opportunity for tennis lovers to practice and play casually while at school, and for those who want to learn the sport.
When was your club established?
Our club was established this school year!
Who are your current leaders (advisors, president, vice president, etc.)?
I’m Sydnie Stanton, the president. Our [faculty] advisor is Dr. Joanne McKeown, Kayla Bolanos is our VP, Mike Cocchiola is our treasurer, Savannah Smentkowski is our secretary, and Maggie Hallowich is our social media person.
When does your club meet?
Our club is currently meeting on Monday nights at 8:30 p.m. in the Arc.
What are the biggest challenges that your club faces?
Having to share resources, spaces, and utilities with NCAA sports has been a bit of a challenge. Probably because our school is so small. It might take a little to find our footing, but it’s gonna be worth it.
If you could pair up with another club for an event or project, who would it be?
Probably volleyball since it’s the other club sport. I think having a battle of the sports, where we have to compete with the volleyball team in their sport and vice versa, would be cool.
Any projects that your club is excited about?
We’re excited to have Anti-tennis days, like pickleball, as well as championships, and incorporate other tennis-themed things, such as watching “Challengers.”
If you had an unlimited budget, what dream project would your club put it towards?
If we had an unlimited budget, we would go to the U.S. Open, of course. Everyone would get in for free and the best seats. To be more grounded, though, probably to buy ball launchers or to have a school-wide tennis tournament.
What would you say to aspiring tennis players who might be nervous to start?
What I love about tennis is how fun it is, and how easy it is to play whenever and with whoever. Because it’s a 1v1 to 2v2 sport at most, it’s really easy to play with a few friends, and to practice any skill you need to increase your game. You don’t have to stick to offense or defense, and get to play the whole court. It’s a satisfying game with a lot of strategy.
